Drive to Columbus: I left at 10:30 am expecting about a 6 hour drive. What I got: 10 hour drive; about a 3 hour delay due to this and getting stuck in rush hour traffic in Indianapolis.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ind. — A semitrailer truck driver slammed into stopped traffic Wednesday morning, causing a chain-reaction crash and fire that closed all lanes of I-74.

The crash occurred just after 10 a.m. on the eastbound lanes of I-74 near the 27 mile marker, Montgomery County Chief Deputy Ryan Needham said in a news release.

The driver reportedly failed to brake for stopped traffic from a separate crash, ramming into a semi hauling propane which caught fire and eventually was extinguished.

A third semi was rear-ended as a result of the chain reaction and also was pushed into a Ford Ranger — the fourth and final vehicle impacted.

As of 4 p.m., the eastbound lanes of I-74 remained closed. Authorities rerouted traffic onto Ind. 25 to U.S. 136 in Waynetown, the news release states.

Upshot: I first started driving cross country in 1980. Since then, our highways have gotten worse and truck traffic has gotten exponentially greater (even per capita). Driving long distances is no longer enjoyable; it is a kind of torture these days. And it isn’t going to get better.
