Steamboat Eve…

I remember a time when this race excited me because I wanted to do well; that was basically the first two years I did it. Then, it more or less became an afterthought to races that were more important to me, but I still liked the atmosphere.

This year: it would be incorrect to say that it bores me; I do feel the excitement for others. But that 24 hour walk (59.9 miles, coming in unprepared) did take something out of me, so this 15K will be a “jog through”. And the forecast is for 67 F, with 80 percent humidity. So realistically, this will be a 10-10:30 mpm “jog through”, I think. I might even walk it like I did in 2011 (which was also 2 weeks after a 24 hour event).

Once again, I participated in the “Building Steam” training program, as I have every year (save one, 2011) since 2003 (when I didn’t even do the race); even in 2010 I helped for part of it.

This year, I liked the people I worked with (Cathy and Vickie) and I liked the students I worked with; they were determined and reasonably dedicated.

As far as the leadership of the Building Steam program: I have great respect for Pam and Jim Jim McIntyre, Phil Lockwood as well as for many of the other group leaders. I’ll just leave it at that. I would be interested to see what other group leaders thought. Numbers were down (participants) but that meant that we had a bit more room on the paths.

So, I get up early tomorrow and “join the parade”, so to speak.
