Race for the Cure 2015: stopping the performance bleeding

Overcast, 64 F, 84 % humidity.
8:39, 8:02 (16:42), 9:32 (26:14) Worst as a runner, but I was ok with it. Previous Race For the Cure:

My journey to infinity continues, with a slight “hiccup”

If I can take away anything positive it is that I did NOT collapse at the end; I kept running hard. And, I was significantly faster than I was last week, even though last week’s course is a much faster one. I felt better going into the race.

I drove to the Kroger parking lot and jogged almost 1 mile to the Notre Dame high school track, where I met my department chair. We jogged another mile and I was ready to go. Once again, I had mistakenly signed up as a “walker” but I ran with the runners.

Spooked by last week’s bad race and wary of the high humidity (84 percent, though it was only 64 F) I took it relatively easy going up the big hill. I am always slow in that mile; today I was especially slow. The next mile is downhill and it wasn’t fast enough; I was still working. The last part: I let one target get away from me; actually a couple of them. But I kept the pace reasonably steady and had my fasted “final 1.1” over the past 3 years. But it wasn’t enough to overcome my slow start.

But overall, I am feeling better.

Mat and I walked to the car and I drove him home; ate a quick bite and made it to the weight room:
Start: super set of pull ups (3 sets of 10), rows (3 sets of 10 x 110), machine military presses (3 sets of 10 x 100 each arm), pull down (3 sets of 10 with 150)
Rotator cuff and the final two sets of 10 pull ups (5 sets of 10 total)
bench press 10 x 135, 10 x 145, 10 x 150 (not that easy); rotator cuff rest.

That was 45-50 minutes worth.

Oh well…I knew that there would come a time when I would savor breaking 26 minutes, and that time is here. And, there isn’t a damned thing I can do about it.
But on the other hand, I knew that I paced myself well and I ran hard, and that is all I can ask of myself.

This is what last year looked like (through May). I am certainly slower but I am not as far along on training; last year I had more “hard miles” under my belt by this time.
