The Religion of Peace Strikes Again

And, AS USUAL, the target was other Muslims:

BAGHDAD (AP) — A wave of car bombings tore through mostly Shiite Muslim neighborhoods of the Baghdad area starting Monday afternoon, leaving at least 66 dead in the latest outburst of an unusually intense wave of bloodshed roiling Iraq.
The blasts are the latest indication that Iraq’s security is rapidly deteriorating as sectarian tensions exacerbated by months of Sunni-led anti-government protests and the war in neighboring Syria are on the rise.

Iraq has been hit by a wave of bloodshed that has killed more than 350 people in the past two weeks alone.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Monday’s bloodshed, but the attacks bore the hallmarks of al-Qaida’s Iraqi arm. The group, known as the Islamic State of Iraq, frequently uses car bombs and coordinated blasts in an effort to undermine Iraqis’ confidence in the Shiite-led government.

Yes, I know; centuries ago, Christians did such things to each other (sans modern weapons, of course). And sure, you had, for example, the Catholic-Protestant violence in Northern Ireland too….but to this degree?

Since this was Muslim on Mulsim violence, I wonder if we will hear the usual “they were hijacking a peaceful religion for evil ends” canard again.
I don’t know.

But here is how it appears to me: when people react peacefully and rationally…it is in THESE instances that religion is being hijacked. Seriously: read the “holy texts” (Koran, Bible); those are very violent books. Yes, that includes the Christian New Testament too (e. g. read revelation, or read Acts, Chapter 5:

A man named Ananias, however, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property.
He retained for himself, with his wife’s knowledge, some of the purchase price, took the remainder, and put it at the feet of the apostles.
But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart so that you lied to the holy Spirit and retained part of the price of the land?a
While it remained unsold, did it not remain yours? And when it was sold, was it not still under your control? Why did you contrive this deed? You have lied not to human beings, but to God.”
When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last, and great fear came upon all who heard of it.
The young men came and wrapped him up, then carried him out and buried him.

After an interval of about three hours, his wife came in, unaware of what had happened.
Peter said to her, “Tell me, did you sell the land for this amount?” She answered, “Yes, for that amount.”
Then Peter said to her, “Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen, the footsteps of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”
At once, she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men entered they found her dead, so they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.

Now I doubt that ANY modern Christian would think that the death penalty is appropriate for lying about how much you gave to your church. Clearly this wasn’t a problem for people living at that time.

It would be great if the Muslims would say “enough is enough” ….and maybe someday they will. But I doubt that I’ll live to see it.
