Yet Another Right Wing Lie About President Obama

This is the “oh, Obama didn’t celebrate D-day” meme:

Of course, this is FALSE:

Obama commemorations similar to Bush’s

Obama delivered speech at Normandy for D-Day 65th anniversary in 2009. President Obama traveled to Normandy for a June 6, 2009 ceremony honoring the 65th anniversary of D-Day. He delivered a speech honoring the troops, saying in part, that victory “came down to the men who landed here – those who now rest in this place for eternity, and those who are with us today. Perhaps more than any other reason, you, the veterans of that landing, are why we still remember what happened on D-Day. You are why we come back.”

Bush administration commemorated D-Day in 2001 and 2004, but spent others in meetings and at least one concert. White House archives of June 6 for each year President Bush was in office only show Bush commemorating D-Day in 2001 and 2004. In 2001, Bush dedicated a D-Day memorial in Virginia, and in 2004, he went to Normandy to mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day. There are no “news” references to D-Day in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, or 2008.

On 2005 D-Day anniversary, Bush hosted a concert celebrating Black Music Month and did not recognize the holiday. While Hoft and Fox criticized Obama for attending a “party” instead of recognizing the anniversary of D-Day, on June 6, 2005, Bush held a concert at the White House celebrating Black Music Month. According to the White House archives, Bush also did not commemorate the D-Day anniversary.

2009:

Are these right wingers stupid, ignorant or liars? My guess: the rank and file are mostly stupid and ignorant. But the Fox News crew are professional liars.

  1. You say he made a speech in 2009, but as the picture says, what about 2010, 2011, and 2012? I can’t find anything where commemorated D-day at all those years. I could be wrong.

    • The picture(its right up there) says:
“In all the years since DDay 1945, there are 3 occasions when a President failed to go to the DDay Monument that honors the soldiers killed during the invasion. Only 3 times. (it repeats)”
I can tell you 30 times, or more, that a sitting President was somewhere other than the Memorial on the anniversary. But only now, only with this President, does it matter enough to hack up a shitty photoshop and meme it out to your buddies.

    • The other comments got it right. The lie was the “this was the only three times a President didn’t go to the D-Day memorial. For example: Bush went twice.

I honestly didn’t see this as a subtle point.

  2. The Point is that Bush commemorated it as often as Obama has been doing, so show a precedence of neither president doing much for it.

  3. Since my Father was one of the soldiers for D Day – I went with him every year to Bush’s Memorial for D Day – you assholes [Ollie’s note: if you have to resort to this, you don’t have much going for you. ] that put the socialist [Ollie’s note: based on your comment, I doubt that you know what “socialist” means ] president in office are wrong. My Father died not knowing we did not elect a brilliant war hero.

Ollie’s note: yes, Senator McCain was a genuine war hero, but being a war hero doesn’t guarantee being a good president. My father served 23 years in the Air Force and saw combat in Vietnam twice and despised the Republicans, especially the second President Bush.

  4. I would say that increasing the healthcare for the returning wounded Warriors, funding mental healthcare for the VA hospitals, assisting military families in housing and education, as well as repairing Walter Reed Hospital from rodents and mold, increasing rehabilitation financing for injured soldiers would far outweigh the necessity of attending a ceremony.

    • Uh, try comparing his visits to the visits of the other Presidents. Seriously, if you can’t think at a higher level than this, please go away. 🙂

    • Well most scientists are liberal so the liberals do things like design computers and the internet, which you happen to be using at the moment.

I would be fun to watch people like you create your own technology.
