Issues big and small….

This is so pathetic it is laughable. Guess what: if you are an hourly employee, you sign up for hours and get paid BY THE HOUR. This isn’t true of salaried employees and isn’t true of the owner/ownership. Watch Fox News muddle the issue.

Now on the left: yeah, I like Katha Pollitt. But I really don’t care about this issue, at least in this way.

To me: prostitution should be legal and regulated (freedom of activity issues). But all of this MALE PRIVILEGE stuff makes my eyes roll. Yes, guys get sexually aroused easier and sometimes we just want a release; “pleasing” has nothing to do with it. The urge is merely biology.

Now many of us handle this differently. I don’t do this, but if two adults want to set up a contract, then why not?

Yeah, it sucks as it is right now, but right now, it is illegal in most places.

For those offended by my trolling…..

Poor Gretchen Carlson: so dumb that she doesn’t know how free markets work:

On February 5, CVS Caremark announced that it would stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products at its pharmacy stores by the beginning of October. The move was met with praise from health organizations like the American Cancer Society and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the nation’s largest philanthropy dedicated to public health. President Obama also weighed in on the decision with a statement of support, saying it was a “profoundly positive” move and will help advance efforts “to reduce tobacco-related deaths, cancer, and heart disease, as well as bring down health care costs.”

As if on cue, Fox News responded to Obama’s praise by manufacturing a controversy over the CVS decision.

On Fox’s The Real Story, host Gretchen Carlson approached the CVS decision with suspicion and a remarkably uninformed premise, asking, “Is it OK legally … to restrict tobacco availability in a private store like this?” She questioned her guests as to whether they would continue shopping at CVS and observed that, “For people who smoke, you know, they have a right to buy cigarettes. It’s not illegal.”

Gee, you’d think that what a store sells would be up to the store, right? Uh….I think that Ms. Carlson understands that very well.

Her “playing the hopelessly confused blonde” is just an act. That is, unless Stanford University graduate who studied at Oxford (in England) is really that dumb. :-)

Now THAT is trolling, though, of course, she gets paid big money for it.

Fox News: Elitist?

Guess what Fox News is doing? They are complaining that President Obama is delivering a simplified message for “low information voters”. Gretchen Carlson is actually complaining about that!

Hmmm, I wonder why? Perhaps it is the way President Obama is attacking Mitt Romney and his “lead the United States to the New Gilded Age” program via his trickle down (supply side) economic programs?

The Romney fundraiser in the Hamptons continues to inspire much justified hilarity. Matt Yglesias has fun with whining rich people complaining that they are the engine of the economy, pointing out that quite a few of the whiners make their money in ways that arguably does very little for growth — say, by running funds that collect so much in fees that they leave investors worse off.

There is, however, an even broader critique of the whole keep taxes low on jobcreatorsenginesoftheeconomy thing — it doesn’t make sense even when the rich really earn their money. I’ve tried to make this point before, with regard to optimal top tax rates, but without as much success as I’d like; so let’s try it again.

So, imagine a Romney supporter named John Q. Wheelerdealer, who works 3000 hours a year and makes $30 million. And let’s suppose that he really does contribute that much to the economy, that his marginal product per hour — the amount he adds to national income by working an extra hour — really is $10,000. This is, by the way, standard textbook microeconomics: in a perfectly competitive economy, factors of production are supposedly paid precisely their marginal product.

Now suppose that President Obama has reduced Mr. Wheelerdealer to despair; not only does the president waste money by doing things like feeding children, he says mean things about some rich people, which is just like the Nazis invading Poland, or something. So Wheelerdealer decides to go Galt. Well, actually just one-third Galt, reducing his working time to just 2000 hours a year so he can spend more time with his wife and mistress.

According to marginal productivity theory, this does in fact shrink the economy: Wheelerdealer adds $10,000 worth of production for every hour he works, so his semi-withdrawal reduces GDP by $10 million. Bad!

But what is the impact on the incomes of Americans other than Wheelerdealer? GDP is down by $10 million — but payments to Wheelerdealer are also down by $10 million. So the impact on the incomes of non-Wheelerdealer America is … zero. Enjoy your leisure, John!

OK, there’s a catch: Wheelerdealer pays taxes, and when he chooses to work less, he pays less taxes. So there is in fact a welfare loss to the rest of America, but it comes only through the fact that revenue falls.

Krugman goes on to talk about “optimal tax theory”; the idea is that taxes should be progressive, especially on the higher income brackets. Obviously, taxing too much is bad too, but the optimum tax rate varies with income.

Yet Another Right Wing Lie About President Obama

This is the “oh, Obama didn’t celebrate D-day” meme:

Of course, this is FALSE:

Obama commemorations similar to Bush’s

Obama delivered speech at Normandy for D-Day 65th anniversary in 2009. President Obama traveled to Normandy for a June 6, 2009 ceremony honoring the 65th anniversary of D-Day. He delivered a speech honoring the troops, saying in part, that victory “came down to the men who landed here – those who now rest in this place for eternity, and those who are with us today. Perhaps more than any other reason, you, the veterans of that landing, are why we still remember what happened on D-Day. You are why we come back.”

Bush administration commemorated D-Day in 2001 and 2004, but spent others in meetings and at least one concert. White House archives of June 6 for each year President Bush was in office only show Bush commemorating D-Day in 2001 and 2004. In 2001, Bush dedicated a D-Day memorial in Virginia, and in 2004, he went to Normandy to mark the 60th anniversary of D-Day. There are no “news” references to D-Day in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, or 2008.

On 2005 D-Day anniversary, Bush hosted a concert celebrating Black Music Month and did not recognize the holiday. While Hoft and Fox criticized Obama for attending a “party” instead of recognizing the anniversary of D-Day, on June 6, 2005, Bush held a concert at the White House celebrating Black Music Month. According to the White House archives, Bush also did not commemorate the D-Day anniversary.

2009:

Are these right wingers stupid, ignorant or liars? My guess: the rank and file are mostly stupid and ignorant. But the Fox News crew are professional liars.

Frauds and Lies of various kinds….

So, Obamacare is being “forced” on the rest of us, but not on Congress and the President?

Millard Fillmore can’t find the text in the act itself…and here is why he can’t: it isn’t in there. What is on the side of the van is a lie put forth by…surprise, Fox News.

Religion
Crazy Rick is talking about Satan destroying America (or attempting to):

This is not a political war at all. This is not a cultural war. This is a spiritual war. And the Father of Lies has his sights on what you would think the Father of Lies would have his sights on: a good, decent, powerful, influential country – the United States of America. If you were Satan, who would you attack in this day and age. There is no one else to go after other than the United States and that has been the case now for almost two hundred years, once America’s preeminence was sown by our great Founding Fathers.

He didn’t have much success in the early days. Our foundation was very strong, in fact, is very strong. But over time, that great, acidic quality of time corrodes even the strongest foundations. And Satan has done so by attacking the great institutions of America, using those great vices of pride, vanity, and sensuality as the root to attack all of the strong plants that has so deeply rooted in the American tradition.

He was successful. He attacks all of us and he attacks all of our institutions. The place where he was, in my mind, the most successful and first successful was in academia. He understood pride of smart people. He attacked them at their weakest, that they were, in fact, smarter than everybody else and could come up with something new and different. Pursue new truths, deny the existence of truth, play with it because they’re smart. And so academia, a long time ago, fell.

And you say “what could be the impact of academia falling?” Well, I would have the argument that the other structures that I’m going to talk about here had root of their destruction because of academia. Because what academia does is educate the elites in our society, educates the leaders in our society, particularly at the college level. And they were the first to fall.

Surf to Right Wing Watch to read more.

Of course, we have our own right wing clowns in our backyard; check out the Peoria bishop (Catholic Church):

For 2,000 years the enemies of Christ have certainly tried their best. But think about it. The Church survived and even flourished during centuries of terrible persecution, during the days of the Roman Empire.

The Church survived barbarian invasions. The Church survived wave after wave of Jihads. The Church survived the age of revolution. The Church survived Nazism and Communism. And in the power of the resurrection, the Church will survive the hatred of Hollywood, the malice of the media, and the mendacious wickedness of the abortion industry.

The Church will survive the entrenched corruption and sheer incompetence of our Illinois state government, and even the calculated disdain of the President of the United States, his appointed bureaucrats in HHS, and of the current majority of the federal Senate.

This is Daniel Jenky who is rather loud at times.

Unfortunately, there is a kind of fraud that bothers me more than any of the above.
I like science, but unfortunately, more articles (as a percentage) are being retracted than ever before. True: this might be because there are more fact-checkers, but some signs point to scientists succumbing to the pressure to publish in the best places and rushing to do so prior to rechecking their work.

Now of course, much of this might be statistical error; after all, something verified at the .05 level has a 5 percent chance of being wrong (e. g., the experiment worked due to randomness). But remember that the percentage of retracted articles are going up, so this shouldn’t be the cause of so many retractions.

And of course, given that papers often assume previously published results, well one retraction might lead to dozens of other related retractions…and this might stem from using work and results that haven’t been replicated.

Again, it is the race to be “first” that might be the issue.

In any event, this is a major black eye for science and one that we really can’t afford right now, given that so many issues depend on science.

Neutrinos, Fox News Victim Card and Some Religion

Neutrinos: no, they don’t move faster than the speed of light. New experimental evidence is in.

Remember the FFF “hey lapsed or liberal Catholic: why don’t you leave the Church” ad that appeared in the New York Times? A similar “why don’t you leave Islam” ad was rejected by the Times.

Text:

Will it be religious freedom, freedom of speech, or back to the Dark Ages? Do you choose women and their rights, or imams and their wrongs? Whose side are you on?

In light of the ongoing, ruthless, international jihad against non-Muslims, the 1,400-year record of institutionalized oppression of women, the 18,560 Islamic attacks across the world since 9/11, and the endangering of free peoples across the world, if you’re part of the Islamic jihad, you’re part of the problem.

Why are you aiding and abetting Islamic leaders who have repeatedly and publicly announced a jihad to subjugate Christians, Jews, Hindus, and all non-Muslims, and to deny the rights of all women everywhere, Muslim or not?

Think of the acute misery, poverty, needless suffering, social evils and deaths that can be laid directly at the door of the Islam’s antiquated doctrine that commands jihad and genocide.

If you imagine you can change the mosque from within — get it to lighten up on Jew-hatred, hatred of women, hatred of non-Muslims, hatred of gays — you are deluding yourself. If you remain a “good Muslim,” you are doing “bad” to the rights of women and non-Muslims everywhere. You’re kidding yourself if you think the mosque is ever going to expunge the Qur’an of its violent texts that inspire jihad, or interpret them out of existence.

Your mosque hysterically claims that freedom of speech and the truth about jihad and Islamic supremacism are “an assault against Islam.” You are savvy enough to realize that the real assault is by the mosque against human rights. A captured internal document of the Muslim Brotherhood declares that its goal in the U.S. is “eliminating and destroying Western civilization from within and sabotaging its miserable house.” Is that an agenda you endorse?

Obama has compromised, but Islam never budges. Instead, it is fully embarked upon a stealth jihad, using the Justice Department to force businesses and educational institutions to accommodate Islamic law — the same Islamic law that denies the freedom of speech, mandates death for apostates, and oppresses women and non-Muslims.

Why put up with an institution that dehumanizes women and non-Muslims — fully 9/10ths of humanity? Ask your imam: Does he support Hamas? Hizb’Allah? The destruction of Israel? Does he condemn the slaughter of Christians in Egypt, Pakistan, Nigeria, Iraq, etc. Does he vocally denounce Islamic honor killings, FGM, forced marriages, child marriage, polygamy? As a “moderate” Muslim, you tell yourself and the world that you have chucked out the violent doctrine and hateful, oppressive decrees of your religion, and yet you keep identifying with the ideology that threatens liberty for women and menaces freedom by slaughtering, oppressing and subjugating non-Muslims.

There is a more welcoming home for you!

Join those of us who put humanity above the vengeful, hateful and violent teachings of Islam’s “prophet.”

As a member of the “umma,” of an avowedly hateful, supremacist, and antidemocratic club, isn’t it time you vote with your feet? Please, exit en mosque.

Very truly,

The reason given: the ad, according to the Times, might put our troops in danger. In other words, backwards people who will riot when the hear stuff that they don’t like in effect have a veto over what we say?

Also from Friendly Atheist: a collection of various atheist posters and billboards.

Personally, I prefer the ones aimed at those who are already skeptical: “have doubts? You aren’t alone”, etc.

But one thing to consider: yes, young people are leaving churches. But the primary reason is NOT atheists (“New Atheists” or otherwise). Here is a blog post from a Christian blog on this topic.

My whole point of talking about these topics: I am not really out to convert anyone, per se. What I want is: I’d like to see religious myths taken out of public policy and science! I don’t want people thinking that some deity will protect us from the consequences of climate change or driving public policy decisions.

I sometimes talk about the intellectual aspects and what makes sense to me…and about what doesn’t make sense to me. But that isn’t about converting anyone else.

This is why we call Fox News Liars…

Note where 8.6 in November is plotted, relative to the 9.0 and 8.8 at the beginning of the graph.

I suppose there is no problems here from the Republican point of view, because in their eyes, data is irrelevant.

Here is another example: the Republicans claim that Obamacare is “not paid for” even though official CBO statistics say otherwise:

I’ve noticed an odd thing in comments whenever the subject of Obamacare comes up. Many commenters scoff when I say that the Obama health reform was fully paid for; not only that, but some of them confidently assert that the Congressional Budget Office says that the reform will increase the deficit.[...]Oh, and it’s paid for year by year, too — whatever you may have heard about 10 years of taxes paying for 6 years of coverage, or whatever, they’re basically lies.

If you have heard from your favorite source of information that the CBO says that Obamacare increases the deficit, you’ve just learned how reliable your source is.

Whether the conservative media are fundamentally intellectually dishonest, intellectually retarded (in that they can never acknowledge error), stupid or just plain dishonest…it is hard to say. My guess: they see themselves as a provider of entertainment of a type.
