UK: having the Iraq investigation that we should have had here.
Karl Rove now tells us that his “biggest mistake” was not fighting back against the perception that the Bush administration deliberately misled us into the Iraq war. His main evidence that nothing like that happened is the fact that a 2005 commission found no wrongdoing.
Can I say the obvious? That investigation took place amidst a climate of fear. Bush was still riding high; intelligence officials feared retaliation if they spoke out (see Plame, Valerie), and practically everyone inside the Beltway was eager not to open the can of worms involved in admitting that what everyone suspected had actually happened, did.
Krugman points us to this FT.com article:
[...]As documents released by the inquiry make clear, the government was warned the invasion would increase the threat of terrorism to the UK. All this was disregarded, as Mr Blair embarked determinedly on his great adventure with George W. Bush into the mire of Mesopotamia, creating laboratory conditions for the urban warfare urged on jihadis by Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda’s strategist.
It is now harder than ever to avoid the conclusion that the Bush and Blair governments cherry-picked morsels of intelligence. Why does any of this matter now?
Aside from Lady Manningham-Buller’s account, the most suggestive reasons are to be found in the testimony this month of Carne Ross, a UK diplomat in charge of the Iraq dossier at the United Nations, who resigned from the Foreign Office over the war. Mr Ross, basing his exposition on prewar documents and government policy consensus, says containment of Saddam was working but neither the UK nor the US seemed interested in taking obvious steps to reinforce it. Instead, they gradually exaggerated the threat he posed, suppressing contrary opinion. [...]

Strange Boxing Matches
Can you find the punch that did it? (you don’t have to wait long)
There’s no crying in boxing!
I don’t know what is going on here; remember that McCall won the first one by knockout and was heavyweight champion, and even won round 2. This fight was 1 rounds apiece at this point.

Mr. O’Reilly: porn outsells calculus textbooks too. So what is your point?
23 July 2010 knee rehab
Upon waking up, swelling down; the knee almost looks normal. We’ll see about the flexibility later.
Update: after PT, here are the stats (very warm): straight: 2 degrees off (down from 6), flexed: 125 degrees (up from 113).
When I got home, I did the CD case and am on 2 of them (double CD) but can’t touch one yet.
Later: walked about 1.25 miles in FPNC (Bee Tree plus Valley); had a bit of trouble on the down hills; Olivia had to wait up on me at times.
Here is the “straightness” progression:

15 July, surgery was on 9 July.

19 July, note I can touch the 2 CD case but it still fits under.

23 July, 2 CD case doesn’t fit without being forced.

One CD can still slide under easily. On the other leg, I can’t fit one CD under.
First Pass At Sarah Palin’s book: Going Rogue
I am going to write a more extensive review of Sarah Palin’s book, Going Rogue. I checked it out of the library this afternoon and am at page 62.
Remember the Exxon Valdez disaster and settlement? This is what happened:
The Supreme Court handed corporate America a major victory this week when it sharply reduced the amount of money Exxon Mobil has to pay in punitive damages for the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska. An Alaskan jury had initially ruled Exxon should pay five billion dollars in punitive damages but in 2006, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court cut the award of punitive damages in half. On Wednesday, the Supreme Court cut the amount of punitive damages again and ordered Exxon Mobil to pay just $500 million in punitive damages – one tenth of the original jury’s ruling.
This is what then Governor Palin said:
So what does she say in her book? Page 62:
Exxon Mobil’s litigation compounded the suffering, especially for the Cordova and Valdez fishermen. Court challenges stretched on for two decades. It took twenty years for Alaska to achieve victory. As governor, I directed our attorney general to file an amicus brief on behalf of palintiffs in the case, and, thanks to Alaska’s able attorneys arguing in front of the highest court in the land, in 2008 the U. S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the people. Finally, Alaskans could recover some of their losses.
Hmm, she sure paints a rather different picture in her book than she did in the video, no?
It isn’t over until it is over…again
Who is going to win? Well…watch.
Rachel Maddow: Sherrod story demonstrates ‘scare white people’ tactic
Someone left a comment about this story:
But fails to mention that concerns about President Obama’s safety are well founded:
Since Mr Obama took office, the rate of threats against the president has increased 400 per cent from the 3,000 a year or so under President George W. Bush, according to Ronald Kessler, author of In the President’s Secret Service.
Some threats to Mr Obama, whose Secret Service codename is Renegade, have been publicised, including an alleged plot by white supremacists in Tennessee late last year to rob a gun store, shoot 88 black people, decapitate another 14 and then assassinate the first black president in American history.
