McCain Campaign Desperation Play Fails

Via the Jed Report

John McCain launched the final attack of his campaign, a fraudulent assault on Barack Obama that serves as a fitting reminder of the fundamental dishonesty not only of his own campaign, but also of the dishonesty of his allies in the right-wing propaganda establishment: Matt Drudge and FOX News.

All you need to know to understand the video is that the Drudge, FOX, and the McCain campaign joined forces with Newsbusters to push a story that the San Francisco Chronicle had concealed an eleven month old recording that supposedly contained devastating audio of Barack Obama proposing to bankrupt the entire coal industry.

Not only was that story false (more detail below), but it turns out that Barack Obama and John McCain have the same position on clean coal technology, and Ohio’s Republican senator said McCain’s plan to fight global warming would “put coal out of business.” Here’s the video:

Here’s the facts that the McCain-Drudge-FOX axis of weasel does not want you to know: The Chronicle had not concealed the recording, which had been on the newspaper’s website all along. And rather than reveal some sinister scheme, what it actually demonstrated was that Barack Obama supported clean coal technology — a position he shares with none other than John McCain.

Despite the fact that both candidates support clean coal technology, the McCain campaign tried to make the case that Barack Obama wanted to take away jobs from coal country in Ohio and Pennsylvania, and both Drudge and FOX were happy to oblige.

Desperation is not a pretty thing. :) Oh well, the hate merchants (Hannity, Coulter, O’Reilly, Limbaugh) are probably eager for Obama to win as this will give them 8 good years of rallying their pathetic base.

But be prepared: there will be a steady droning from the hard core right wing against Obama and it won’t let up no matter how well he does.

I suppose the McCain campaign knows that it is in deep trouble; Obama futures hit 91 at Intrade and McCain futures are down below 10.

And McCain did not have a good start to his last day of campaigning.

Something was missing from the first of John McCain’s seven campaign stops today: the crowd.

Kicking off the last day of the election in Tampa, Florida, John McCain was welcomed by a roughly 1,000 voters. Compare that to the 15,000 people that President Bush drew to a rally in Tampa on the eve of the 2004 election. “What’s up with that?” wrote Adam Smith at the St. Petersburg Times.

Even Fox News had a bit of difficulty spinning the whole thing. Carl Cameron, who is following the Senator at every stop on Monday, said the crowd size was likely “a little bit disturbing” for the McCain campaign. He added that organizers had set up the venue predicting ten times the number of attendees.

Emphasis mine.

Maybe, just maybe, the right wing will conclude that McCain simply wasn’t wing-nutty enough and nominate a real basket case in 2012? :)
