Republican 527 groups continue to lie
The latest lie: Obama “used to be a Muslim” and is lying about it.
So, how true is this? It isn’t.
First, who made this?
The Republican consultant who helped sink the 1988 Dukakis campaign with his infamous “Willie Horton ad” is using his attack dog skills against Barack Obama. A web ad created by Floyd Brown, founder of a conservative political advocacy group called the National Campaign Fund, accuses the presumptive Democratic nominee of covering up his Muslim past. The ad relies on a mixture of half-truth, innuendo, and dramatic headlines rolling across the screen to depict Obama as fundamentally “untrustworthy.”
Ok, the guy who made this is a well known sleaze-buckett.
How accurate is it?
Documents viewed by the AP showed that students attending the Fransiskus Assisis Catholic school were registered under one of five different religions: Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Catholic or Protestant. Obama, then known as Barry, attended the school from 1st through 3rd grade as student 203. He later enrolled in Public Elementary School Menteng No. 1, a school incorrectly described by the Washington Times Insight magazine and Fox News as an Islamic madrassa.
The Brown ad misses out key facts that cast a very different light on Obama’s Muslim connections. At the Catholic school, he was required to participate in Catholic rituals and pray four times a day. Teachers quoted by the Chicago Tribune said that he was probably registered as a Muslim because this was the religion of his then-Indonesian step-father, Lolo Soetero. Like many Indonesians, Soetero was a rather lax Muslim who drank and did not abide by the strict tenets of the faith.
More importantly, the Brown ad attaches far too much importance to an entry in a ledger written under unknown circumstances more than 40 years ago. The Tribune report notes that the ledger entry was “rife with errors.” It listed Obama as an Indonesian, gave an inaccurate name for his previous school, and made no mention of his mother. It is unclear who wrote the ledger entry, which can be viewed at the school but is unavailable on-line.
In short,
Barring fresh revelations, the Obama campaign’s explanation for the “Muslim” annotation beside Barack’s name in the Catholic school ledger seems reasonable. Three Pinocchios for Floyd Brown.
which means: “Significant factual error and/or obvious contradictions.”
Gee, shocking isn’t it?

Hi Ollie
The economic returns on higher education are very high (and probably going up). Of course it is hard to measure this at the margin (i.e. the next 1% of the population to go to college), but my favorite libertarian economist says here (NYTimes) that the data for this are compelling, even dissing “The Bell Curve” in the process:
So probably college professors are adding a lot of value, they just aren’t teaching the overall quality of student they’d like. Still, the evidence is that you are making a difference.
Oops, I left the above comment on the wrong post.
Sorry (us libertarians aren’t known for being so bright)
As far as i can tell obama went to a madrassa and was raised by the stepfather as a muslim, because he himself was a muslim. In Hawaii he was once again registered in an exclusive private school as a muslim. his mother was an atheist attracted, apparently to muslim men with darker skin than she had. the grandparents were going to a “red” church in washington state on mercer island and his grandparents moved to mercer island because there were socialist teachers at the school that she would attend. I don’t believe obama’s mother would have taught or had anyone teach christian religion to obama because whe was atheist. I think at home probably islam was practiced. I saw online the school registrations and it did say Muslim in both registrations available. I think he found it more convenient to be a chrisitan after meeting michelle. I am now investigating as to whether it is true Rev. Wright was once muslim, word is that he was….Seems odd America would have a President with even a hint of muslim about him…especially after 9/11..but people forget and get fooled and mezmerized by preaching and drama so I guess if obama becomes president it will make the drama loving people happy. As for me having been married to an attorney until he died, I can not for the life of me see how an attorney is a good choice for president! they have no experience in any field that would lend itself to being president. Obama was not a senator 6 months before he was out making speaches, he should do what he loves best..writing books about himself, his ego is far too big to be President, don’t give him a red button or phone!!
From my point of view, it would be great if the next President was an atheist and didn’t believe superstitions of any sort, but that isn’t going to happen.
The fact is that Obama has never embraced the Muslim faith; prior to becoming a Christian he was, if anything, agnostic towards religion.
I find it interesting that you don’t like the fact that he wrote books; thanks for reminding me of the fact that some Americans are very anti-intellectual.
Apparently making shit up on the spot is what passes for a reasoned opinion to some.
