Splut: quick FANS 24 hour report

I’ll elaborate more later. Here are the basics: from what I understand, Dave Daubert won the walking race with just over 80 miles, Barb Curnow was second with 75+ and Marshall King was third with 71.88. Buffalobear (Lawrence Block) also got that total, but took longer.

I was 5′th with 66.2 miles (I think). How I got there: I reached mile 45.24 in about 11:15 (good) but then completely fell apart; not only did I go out too fast for my conditioning, but I ate fatty stuff which made me throw up; my body wouldn’t digest it. I reached mile 50 in 13:41; by then I was walking a few steps, throwing up, walking a few more, throwing up again, and sitting and resting.

I finally said “bleep it” at mile 52.51 (15:36; it took me 4:21 to go 7.4 miles!) and took a 4 hour nap in the Nokoma center (where it was warm and dry). I then perked up enough to get going at about 19:50 and got 13.5 more miles, including those miles that got me to the Ulli Kamm award (100 km).

One note: the lake was full of life; at night you could hear the bullfrogs, and you could see huge catfish in the water.

We got a mixure of stuff: heat, humidity, cool, rain and some mild thundershowers.

For the reord, my marathon split was 6:16 and my 50K split was 7:25.

A couple of remarks: I ended up with two “awards”; one was for being the last person to finish a long lap (you do 2.4 mile laps up until the last hour, then do .25 mile laps); this is called the “do you feel lucky, punk?” award.

I also won the “most inspirational walker award for coming back to the course even when I was whipped. I joked with the other walkers and said that was “I am pathetic and didn’t pace myself well” award. :)

Off to bed…
